Vallisaari Visitor Guide

Getting to Vallisaari

Ferry from Kauppatori (Market Square): Take the JT-Line water bus from Kolera Basin pier 10 in central Helsinki. The crossing takes about 20 minutes. Round trip: EUR 9.80 for adults, EUR 6.80 for ages 7–17 (2026). Children under 7 travel free with an adult. Pay by card or cash — HSL travel cards are not valid on the water bus.

Season: Ferries run 20 May – 12 September 2026. During peak summer (June–August), departures run roughly once an hour.

Tip: Buy your tickets online in advance. The last ferry back to Helsinki departs around 20:00–21:00 depending on the day — always check the schedule before your visit.

Cafe IISI

Wine bar, cafe, and event hub. 100m from the ferry dock. Coffee, pastries, light lunch, wines, cocktails. Home of the famous wine tastings and DJ nights.

IISI Bistro

What to Do on Vallisaari

Nature trails: Explore 110 hectares of untouched nature. The island was a military fortress for centuries and only opened to the public in 2016. Over 400 plant species thrive here.

Historic sites: Walk through old powder cellars, fortifications, and military buildings. The island's history stretches back to the 18th century.

Wine tastings: IISI hosts guided tastings every Friday and Saturday, featuring 5 wines with a sommelier. EUR 59–79 per person. Book tickets

Events: Wine dating, DJ sunset sessions, morning yoga, long-table dinners — over 40 events per summer.

Combine with Suomenlinna: The two islands are only 1 km apart. Many visitors do Suomenlinna in the morning and Vallisaari in the afternoon.

Practical Tips

  • What to bring: Comfortable shoes for trails, sunscreen (south-facing terraces), light jacket for the ferry.
  • Accessibility: Routes from the dock to both restaurants are accessible. Nature trail accessibility varies.
  • Picnic: You can bring your own food to the nature areas. Restaurant terraces are for guests.
